What is nature positive?

Nature Positive is: ‘to measurably halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, and set a trajectory for recovery by 2050’.

Recovery means that ecosystems thrive supporting the needs of future generations, maintaining biodiversity, and playing a critical role in tackling climate change risks.

In a Nature Positive world, business and investment activity has a positive impact on nature.

The global nature crisis – that is, the unprecedented loss of species abundance and diversity – is well documented. Also well recognised is that resolving the climate crisis and ensuring human well-being will not be possible without solving the global nature crisis.

In response, businesses, civil society, and governments are increasingly taking action to protect, restore and rebuild nature. The term ‘nature positive’ recognises that the severity of the global nature crisis requires a response that goes beyond damage limitation, impact minimisation or “no net loss”. A nature positive approach sets the bar higher, with goals of creating, maintaining, and restoring healthy ecosystems. A nature positive approach has the ambition to transform how nations, cities, businesses, investors, and consumers act. The term is being used by leaders who recognise the pressing need to transition the global economy into a nature recovery phase.

The nature positive approach leverages the interconnectedness of nature and aims to simultaneously enrich biodiversity, store carbon, purify water and provide other co-benefits. It applies sound science and indigenous knowledge systems to provide a safe and healthy living environment for people where we can sustain primary production, adapt to climate change, and maintain thriving cultures. It values ‘natural capital’ and ecological integrity as the bases for generating social and financial well-being.

A nature positive target complements and supports the climate target of net zero emissions by 2050. Forward thinking organisations are developing both targets in unison. Climate science shows the secure strategy to stay below a 1.5°C global increase is to rapidly cut emissions whilst concurrently protecting and restoring natural habitats as vast carbon sinks and transforming agriculture from one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases into part of the solution.

We at Nature Positive are optimists. We have adopted the term because with our clients and collaborators we are taking action to transition business models, catchments, and production systems into a regenerative state. Our goal is to build a resilient economy and society through restoring biodiversity and maximising nature’s contributions to people.

Here at Nature Positive our multidisciplinary team of global experts can help your business, organisation or fund achieve your nature positive goals through our advisory, project development and applied research services.
